Asia Moves: Dentons adds five partners in Shanghai

All the latest partner hires and other appointments within firms and offices in the Asia Pacific region.

Australia

Norton Rose Fulbright has hired employment lawyer Samantha Maddern as a partner in Perth. She joins from Herbert Smith Freehills, where she was an executive counsel and worked for nearly five years managing a wide range of workplace relations matters for clients.

China

Dentons, formerly known as Dacheng, has added five partners in Shanghai. Finance partner Wang Shanliang and IP litigation partner Liu Feng have joined the firm as senior partners, who were previously partners at local firms Tiantai and Shenda respectively. TMT lawyer Dong Yueying, also from Shenda, M&A lawyer Hu Hongwei from HHP and TMT lawyer Hu Min from Donghong, join the firm as partners.

Hong Kong

Allen & Overy has hired former Davis Polk & Wardwell counsel Liang Tao as a partner in Hong Kong, in a bid to expand its Greater China debt capital markets practice. Tao has experience in debt and equity transactions including high-yield bond offerings. Recently, he worked on Zhejiang Geely Holding Group’s 2.75 percent credit enhanced green bonds offering valued at $400m.

Clyde & Co has appointed Joyce Chan as a new partner in Hong Kong. Chan was previously a partner of DLA Piper and focuses on advising financial services institutions and intermediaries on a broad range of regulatory and corporate matters.

Holman Fenwick Willan has hired Stephenson Harwood’s former Hong Kong construction head Martin Downey as a partner. Downey will head the Hong Kong construction practice at his new firm. His practice focuses on disputes in the construction industry, including regulatory and environmental issues.

Howse Williams Bowers has hired experienced property lawyer Janet Lee as a partner. Lee previously worked at Hong Kong’s Lands Department in their Legal Advisory and Conveyancing Office. She advises on a wide range of property and conveyancing matters.

Simmons & Simmons has hired former Linklaters counsel Simon McKnight as a partner in Hong Kong. He was previously a member of Linklaters’ London capital markets team. He is experienced in credit and equity derivatives and structured products transactions.

Weil Gotshal & Manges has appointed Baring Private Equity Asia’s general counsel William Hay as a senior counsel. The private equity firm has been a client of Weil and Hay has worked closely with the firm’s partners closely during his six years as the general counsel of Baring. He has over 20 years of transactions experience throughout the region and was a partner of legacy Lovells between 2001 and 2003 in-between many senior in-house roles.

India

Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) has appointed Asim Abbas as a partner in its New Delhi office and will head the firm’s technology, media & telecommunication (TMT) practice. Abbas joins from Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM) after spending just over a year at the firm from Khaitan & Co. Also in New Delhi, CAM has taken on a team of seven lawyers led by litigation partner Sidhartha Barua, who are joining from AZB Partners. In Mumbai, the firm has also recently hired competition lawyer Anshuman Sakle as a partner from Khaitan & Co, where he was a principal associate.

Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM) has hired former general counsel of Cognizant Technology Solutions Anand Bhushan to head its newly opened Chennai office. Bhushan previously headed his own firm Bhushan & Rajaram for four years before joining Cognizant Technology Solutions as general counsel responsible for legal, compliance and government affairs. In that role he managed 70 lawyers across multiple verticals in APAC and North America. The firm has also recently promoted 17 lawyers to partner across its seven offices in India.

Japan

Ashurst has expanded its Tokyo office with the hire of Clifford Chance’s corporate counsel Tracy Whiriskey as a partner. She has experience in advising

Japanese trading, mass media and utilities companies on large-scale outbound transactions, including deals in the insurance sector. Prior to her 10-year career in Clifford Chance, Whiriskey worked at Australian firm Allens.

South Korea

Bae Kim & Lee has added two senior advisors to its Seoul office, Kwang Jo Song and Jeon Hwan Lee. Both of them focus on tax practice and were previously government officials. Lee was formerly the deputy commissioner in the National Tax Office, while Song was the former head of Seoul Regional Tax Office.
