Nixon Peabody has opened an office in Singapore and launched an association with local firm Angeline Suparto Law Corporation (ASLC).

The dual play is the US firm’s latest push into Asia and will be its third office in the region.

The office will be overseen by Nixon Peabody Asia Pacific chair David Cheng, who is based in Hong Kong.

Singapore boutique ASLC has eight lawyers and legal professionals and was founded in 2001 by Angeline Suparto, following her career with a number of international firms in Hong Kong and Singapore.

The firm also has a close association with Jakarta boutique Dau & Tuah and mainly advises on corporate and commercial law in Singapore, with a particular focus in foreign investment into Indonesia.

“Singapore is a vibrant market and a business capital for South East Asia,” said Andrew Glincher, Nixon Peabody CEO and managing partner. “It’s an important gateway for our Asian clients who are investing and doing business in the US.”

“We are seeing an increase of activity from clients based in Singapore and surrounding countries looking to expand internationally,” added David Cheng, the firm’s chair and managing partner of China and Asia Pacific. “This addition aligns nicely with our current practices in Hong Kong and mainland China.”

Nixon Peabody opened its first Asia office in 2008 in Shanghai and launched into Hong Kong in 2010 via a formal association with 20-lawyer Hong Kong firm Cheng Wong Lam & Partners. In 2012, it broadened its access to the PRC market by forming a strategic alliance with Chinese firm Hylands. Last year the firm fully integrated its Hong Kong associate firm to create Nixon Peabody CWL.

It is one of the latest firms to tap into the Singapore and the South East Asia markets. Last week Osborne Clarke entered the Singapore market through an association with local firm Queen Street Legal.

International firms that already have a base in the city-state have increasingly looked at local tie-ups to strengthen their offering in the region. K&L Gates has been actively seeking a local merger in Singapore and has held discussions with a number of local firm. Meanwhile Reed Smith and RPC are among firms that have recently entered into a close association.
