The judiciary has named six new Court of Appeal (CoA) justices, including just one woman.
The appointments come amid a wave of retirements from the appellate bench this autumn and the elevation of Terence Etherton to Master of the Rolls on 3 October.
All of the new justices have less than a decade experience on the High Court bench.
Mr Justice Hickinbottom has been elevated to the CoA after joining the High Court bench in 2009, while Mrs Justice Thirlwall – the sole new female justice – became a High Court judge in 2010.
Mr Justice Moylan, Mr Justice Irwin, Mr Justice Henderson and Mr Justice Flaux will also join the CoA bench.
A statement by the judiciary on the appointments said the selection exercise was “open to applicants that satisfied the judicial eligibility condition on a seven-year basis or were judges of the High Court”.
Speculation was rife last year regarding the number of retiring judges. Early retirement among the top tier of the judiciary is still rare, though cases of it have grown in number over the last decade.
