Kirkland & Ellis has promoted six lawyers in London as part of a global promotions round.

The round also saw the firm’s two-year old Houston office see partners made up for the first time, with four associates promoted to partner.

Two City capital markets lawyers have been made partner: Gilles Teerlinck and Tim Volkheimer.

Another duo has been made up in the investment funds group, namely Theodore Cardos and Amala Ejikeme. Financial services and regulatory lawyer Prem Mogan and debt finance specialist Susannah Amini complete the set of new partners in London.

None of the six trained at the firm, with a number having been associates at Linklaters, Allen & Overy, Covington & Burling and Clifford Chance.

In total, Kirkland promoted 81 partners around the world making it the smallest round since 2013. The majority of lawyers were made up in Chicago, a total of 27. New York saw the second highest number of promotions, with other popular jurisdictions including Hong Kong, San Francisco and Palo Alto.

Kirkland made up a quartet of partners in Houston – the first to be promoted since the firm opened in the city in 2014. The four all work in Kirkland’s M&A and private equity group.

No partners were made up in the firm’s Shanghai office for the first time since 2014. Three partners were promoted in Shanghai between 2014 and 2015.

Kirkland typically makes partners of six-year qualified associates, with lawyers first promoted to non-share partners. They then have four or five years to make share partner status and receive a stake in the equity.

In March, Lawyer 2B analysed Kirkland’s last five promotions rounds, finding that just 63 per cent of the firm’s London associates made up since 2010 have remained at the firm.
