Former Master of the Rolls Lord Dyson is returning to chambers at 39 Essex after retiring from the position as most senior civil judge in England in February.
Dyson left the bench two years before the official retirement age of 75. He has held the position since 2012, succeeding Lord Neuberger who became Supreme Court president.
He will rejoin 39 Essex this autumn having been head of chambers at the commercial set before he was appointed to the High Court bench in 1993.
Dyson was officially replaced by Terence Etherton as Master of the Rolls on Monday (3 October).
He is the latest big name to return to 39 Essex this year. The set also attracted former Liberty director Shami Chakrabarti, when she exited the civil rights group in March. Chakrabrti completed her pupillage at 39 Essex, leaving two years later to join the Home Office.
A number of senior judges and former barristers have chosen to return to chambers in recent years, including former High Court judge Bernard Eder, who took early retirement to return to practice at his former set Essex Court Chambers.
Rolls-Royce general counsel Robert Webb QC rejoined his former set Brick Court Chambers last December, while Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer disputes veteran Ian Terry left the magic circle firm for One Essex Court this March.
