K&L Gates has made a gift of $10m (£8.07m) to longstanding client Carnegie Mellon University, to “study the ethical issues posed by artificial intelligence (AI)”, the firm has announced.
This news comes after K&L Gates won a $750m lawsuit for the university against Marvell Technology Group earlier this year, granting Carnegie Mellon $750m.
The lawsuit, which had been ongoing for seven years, accused the company of infringing two hard disk drive patents held by the university.
The US university has set up the ‘K&L Gates Endowment for Ethics and Computational Technologies’ to support the university in furthering scientific and scholarly research and education about the ethical and policy issues that arise from advances in artificial intelligence and other computational technologies.
According to information from the firm, this support will create new faculty positions and doctoral fellowships, as well as a biennial conference and two funds for undergraduate students.
K&L Gates global chairman Peter Kalis said: “Law and technology converge at a profoundly important and signature 21st century challenge: how to define ethical boundaries surrounding the emergence of artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge computational technologies.
“I am extraordinarily proud that K&L Gates is making this major investment in CMU, a global leader in computational technologies.”
