The New York Times has appointed deputy general counsel Diane Brayton to the top in-house role as current legal chief Kenneth Richieri announced his intention to retire at the end of the year.

Brayton will take over on 1 January 2017.

Brayton, who has been deputy general counsel since earlier this year, has filled a series of different in-house roles since joining the company in 2004, including serving as company secretary since 2011.

Prior to joining The New York Times, Brayton was vice president and senior counsel at Credit Suisse First Boston for two years, joining from Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton.

CEO Mark Thompson said that outgoing general counsel Richieri, who was appointed as general counsel in January 2006, was a “trusted advisor who helped guide The Times as it underwent a remarkable evolution from a national print newspaper to a truly international digital media outlet during his three decades of service”.

During his time as legal boss, Richieri was named senior vice president in December 2007 and executive vice president in March 2013. Richieri served as deputy general counsel from 2001 until 2005, and was promoted to vice president in December 2002.

He joined the company in January 1983 as legal counsel.

Commenting on Brayton’s appointment,Thompson said: “Diane’s keen understanding of the legal environment in which The New York Times operates and her broad range of legal and corporate governance expertise make her ideally suited to lead our legal department.

“She is known across the company not just for her reasoned approach to addressing legal matters but also for her passion for our business and her deeply collaborative spirit. I’m looking forward to continuing what is an already strong partnership. ”
