Private equity house TPG has hired General Electric (GE) litigation and government investigations head Bradford Berenson as its legal chief.

Berenson joins TPG in San Francisco as its general counsel after a four-year career at GE. Prior to going in-house he was a partner at Sidley Austin for nearly a decade and associate counsel to US President George W. Bush between 2001 to 2003.

Berenson’s hire comes nearly two years after TPG Capital general counsel Ronald Cami stood down from the company.

Cami joined TPG in 2010 from Cravath Swaine & Moore and is now a partner at Davis Polk & Wardwell.

TPG uses a variety of private equity heavyweights as external counsel. Firms include Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Ropes & Gray and Weil Gotshal & Manges.
