Vives, who was first appointed as chairman in 2014 when founding partner Antonio Garrigues retired, has been tasked with leading the firm’s international expansion into Latin America.

The move follows Garrigues’ decision to pull out of its Latin American alliance in 2013 to begin the process of launching its own offices on the continent.

So far, the firm has opened offices in Colombia, Chile, Peru, Mexico and Brazil. The latest office opening was at the end of 2016, and it is understood that the firm is targeting Ecuador as its next desired office location.

Fernando Vives has spent more than 30 years at Garrigues. He was made partner in 1998 and was head of the corporate and commercial practice from 2001 to 2009.
