Winston & Strawn has launched in Dallas with a 22-partner hire from firms including Jones Day, Norton Rose Fulbright, Greenberg Traurig and Locke Lord.

The launch echoes that of Winston’s Houston opening in 2011, in which the firm hired a 40-lawyer team from failed firm Howrey.

This time, 22 partners have joined from a variety of firms, with the largest group joining from Locke Lord. An of counsel has also joined and will become a partner at Winston.

Locke Lord real estate investment trusts chair and former managing partner Bryan Goolsby has been named as Winston’s Dallas co-head, and brings with him a six-partner team from the firm. This is comprised of business transaction tax co-chair Andrew Betaque and partners Billie Ellis, Todd Thorson, David Lange, Matt Stockstill, and Ken Betts.

Fish & Richardson Dallas managing partner Thomas Melsheimer will co-lead the office with Goolsby and joins alongside four partners – Steven Stodghill, Scott Thomas, Taj Clayton and John Sanders. Of counsel Brett Johnson will become a partner at Winston & Strawn.

Matthew Orwig, Shawn Cleveland and Basheer Ghorayeb have all exited Jones Day’s partnership for Winston, as well as Norton Rose Fulbright business law head Tom Hughes, Greenberg Traurig partner Christina Tate and Squire Patton Boggs partner Jeff Cole.

K&L Gates partner Jordan Klein and Miller Egan Molter & Nelson partner Chip Gage complete the set.

Additionally two Locke Lord partners – Douglas Yeager and Jeffrey Smith – will join Winston & Strawn in Houston.

Gibson Dunn also announced on Tuesday (7 February) it was opening its tenth US office in Houston, which will be staffed entirely by lateral hires. The firm would not confirm who it had hired for the new office.
