Barclays has named global litigation head Stephanie Pagni its new general counsel for Barclays UK.

She replaces Mark Chapman in the role, who was promoted to the position last March. Chapman is understood to have taken leave from the bank to work for a charity in South Africa.

The reshuffle follows a major restructure of Barclays’ legal team last year ahead of ringfencing reforms in 2019 that meant it had to split its retail and investment arms.

Pagni became global head of litigation in 2014, having joined the bank nine years earlier from Allen & Overy where she was an associate.

In her new role she will continue to report into group general counsel Bob Hoyt and Barclays UK CEO Ashok Vaswani.

Her replacement as global litigation chief has not yet been decided, according to a spokesperson for the bank.

Other recent Barclays staff changes include the bank appointing a new global head of financial crime last month, hiring Bank of America (BoA) managing director Frederick Reynolds in New York.

Barclays also appointed former Gibson Dunn & Crutcher partner Mark Shelton as general counsel of its corporate and international business (C&I) last year.

Barclays’ group regulatory counsel Chris Allen left the bank last year to join Standard Chartered in January as its new general counsel for clients and products.
