US disputes firm Boies Schiller & Flexner has hired Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) global head of public international law Dominic Roughton in London.

Roughton becomes the 19th international disputes lawyer in the City office, which specialises in litigation, arbitration and investigations.

His arrival follows the recent departure of arbitration silk Wendy Miles QC, who moved to Debevoise & Plimpton last month.

Roughton specialises in energy and mining arbitrations and international boundary disputes, sovereignty, treaty negotiations, maritime arbitration and ICSID arbitration. He was previously head of HSF’s Tokyo office, spending 12 years as a partner in Japan.

Boies Schiller London office head Natasha Harrison said the firm hopes to capitalise on his Asia links. “His hire helps us to look East. London is a connector between the US and Asia and Dominic will help us serve our Asia clients and build on that work.

“We’re growing London very much organically, but supplement by strategic lateral hires. We’re building the office for the long-term,” she added.

Harrison led the launch of the US firm’s London office in 2013, joining from Bingham McCutchen.

Notable partner hires since the launch include Kenneth Beale who joined alongside Miles from Wilmer Hale in 2015, and investigations partner Matthew Getz from Debevoise in 2016. The office now has four partners and around 15 associates and secondees. The firm has already laid out a growth plan for the capital, taking on extra office space in Old Broad Street’s Tower 42 last year to house up to 25 lawyers and staff.

It posted revenue of £7.6m in London in 2015, its most recent financial filings.

At HSF, Roughton will be replaced by New York partner Laurence Shore, who will be supported by partners Christian Leathley and Andrew Cannon.
