The general counsel of games site Miniclip, Brian Chadwick, has exited for Cooley’s digital media team in London.
Chadwick has been Miniclip’s legal head for nearly seven years and recently led the Swiss-headquartered company through its sale to Chinese business Tencent.
His move to Cooley signals a return to working in private practice. Before he went in-house, Chadwick was a partner at Michelmores’ and founded the firm’s corporate practice in 2006. He also did stints at both Ashurst and McDermott Will & Emery as an associate.
At Cooley, Chadwick will be a special counsel in the firm’s digital media, entertainment and games practice, with a particular focus on the latter in his first year.
“There are so few firms out there that are both corporate-orientated and understand gaming,” Chadwick told The Lawyer. “Gaming companies are not that small and they are increasingly diversifying their revenues through acquisitions. Having been a general counsel at Miniclip, I have that operational experience and know what challenges legal heads face.”
Chadwick’s departure from Miniclip has seen Claudia Gorman promoted to head of legal, working alongside trainee solicitor Nikita Patel.
His arrival at Cooley signals the firm’s third major hire in London this year, after white collar crime partner Louise Delahunty joined from Sullivan & Cromwell and finance partner John Clark joined from Mayer Brown.
