Ooredoo Asia’s general counsel Scott Weenink has left the Qatari telecoms giant to take up a general counsel role with Auckland International Airport.
Weenink will also serve as company secretary of Auckland International Airport, the largest listed company in New Zealand. He has relocated from Singapore back to his home country for this new role.
He takes over the helm from predecessor Charles Spillane who had worked for the company for 13 years before leaving in August last year.
Weenink first joined Qatar Telecom in its Doha headquarters in 2008 as a director for M&A and finance and was promoted to Asia general counsel a year later.
During his time with Ooredoo, he also served as chief corporate affairs officer for Ooredoo Myanmar between 2013 and 2014 and senior director of Ooredoo Asia, whilst continuing his role as Asia general counsel. One of the main projects he worked on was helping the group win one of the first two telecoms licences in Myanmar and the greenfield operations of rolling out mobile services in the country that followed.
Weenink’s departure from Ooredoo follows the resignation of the group’s general counsel and chief corporate affairs officer Michael Hancock, who left the company in July 2015 and now serves as a business consultant in San Miguel Corporation. Ooredoo Group has since appointed interim Ooredoo Myanmar general counsel Bertrand Alexis as acting general counsel.
It is understood that Ooredoo Asia has not yet filled the vacancy left by Weenink’s departure. The legal and regulatory functions are overseen by head of legal Patricia Hartstern and head of regulatory Mikael Grape.
