Iberian firm Cuatrecasas Gonçalves Pereira has entered the Colombian market through an association with local firm Posse Herrera Ruiz.
The firms have created a new company to operate in the country, called Posse Herrera Ruiz & Cuatrecasas, through which the firms will coordinate services for clients in Iberia and Latin America.
According to a statement, “both firms will maintain their independence and alliance policies, and rule out the possibility of merging their firms and brands”.
The alliance will focus on corporate M&A work, banking and finance, international arbitration, tax, infrastructure, and energy and natural resources.
Cuatrecasas corporate partner Alfonso Reina and banking and finance senior associate Carlos Lasarte will move to Bogotá, where they will work indefinitely at the new company.
This is part of the firm’s strategy to expand in the continent, following the opening of its Mexico City office earlier this year. The firm also has a base in Sao Paulo since 2000.
Outside of the continent, the firm opened an office in Beijing earlier this year, and has continued to invest in its office space and referral alliance with France’s Gide Loyrette Nouel, Italy’s Chiomenti Studio Legale and Germany’s Gleiss Lutz.
Cuatrecasas joins other Iberian firms in the race to cover Latin America: Garrigues launched an office in Chile in March and merged firm Philippi Prietocarrizosa & Uría added 100 Peruvian lawyers earlier this year.
