Asia moves: Former Dorsey & Whitney Hong Kong head joins Clydes

Dorsey & Whitney’s former head of Hong Kong John Chrisman has joined Clyde & Co as a partner. But who else has moved? Find out in The Lawyer‘s latest roundup of partner hires and appointments in the Asia Pacific region.

Australia

DLA Piper has hired restructuring partner Macaire Bromley from Australian firm DibbsBarker in Sydney. Prior to join DibbsBarker in May 2014 as a partner, she spent three years in Allen & Overy’s London office as a senior associate. She had also practised at Ashurst (formerly Blake Dawson) and Clayton Utz previously.

Hogan Lovells has strengthened its Perth office with the hire of corporate partner Matthew Johnson from Clyaton Utz. Johnson’s practice focuses on M&A, private equity, capital markets and corporate advisory work. He also has experience in the energy and resources sector. Johnson is qualified to practice law in England and Australia. His appointment brings Hogan Lovells’ Australia team to seven partners and 25 fee-earners.

China

Chinese firm AnJie has added corporate partner Simon Li and intellectual property partner James Ma in its Beijing office. Li joins from Jones Day, where he was an associate, while Ma joins from Allen & Overy’s Shanghai office where he was an associate.

Hong Kong

Addleshaw Goddard has hired corporate partner Andrew Yang from Goodwin Procter. Prior to Yang’s two-year stint at Goodwin Procter as a partner, he was a senior associate in Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy for eight years.

Clifford Chance has recruited corporate partner Frank Yuen to its Hong Kong office to enhance its local law offerings. Yuen will join the firm in early 2017 from Hong Kong firm Woo Kwan Lee & Lo, where he was a partner since 1997. Yuen is well-known for his role in some of the most complex and high profile M&A and equity capital market transactions in the market.

Clyde & Co has hired Dorsey & Whitney’s former Hong Kong office head John Chrisman as a partner in its corporate team. Chrisman relocated to Hong Kong from Sydney in 2013 when the firm closed its sole Australia office as part of the firm’s strategy to consolidate its corporate practice in key financial centres. Qualified in the US, he is experienced in India capital markets practice and cross-border M&A transactions. Following Chrisman’s move, Dorsey has named corporate partner Simon Chan as its new Hong Kong head.

Reynolds Porter Chamberlain (RPC) has appointed Jeremy Cunningham as a partner in its corporate team in Hong Kong. Cunningham joins from Mayer Brown JSM, where he was made up in 2011. He focuses on M&A and private equity transactions, particularly for clients in the media, advertising and insurance industries.

Ropes & Gray has promoted Vincent Ip in its private investment funds group as a partner in Hong Kong. Ip is the only Asia-based lawyers made up in the firm’s latest 11-strong global promotion round. He joined the firm in 2006 and focuses on advising fund sponsors on all aspects of their business. His clients include AlpInvest Partners, Bain Capital, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, CITIC Private Equity, FountainVest Partners, GIC Special Investments, Harvest Capital Partners, RRJ Capital and TPG.

Japan

Nishimura & Asahi has become the first large Japanese firm to open a representative office in Dubai. The firm has named Tokyp-based corporate partner Kazuho Nakajima and associate Masao Morishita as representatives of the new office. Morishita will relocate to Dubai to reside in Dubai. He has been based in Dubai since 2013, when he was seconded to a Dubai subsidiary in of a major Japanese trading company Marubeni Corporation.

South Korea

Yoon & Young has hired former Korean National Tax Service commissioner Duk Joong Kim as a senior advisor in its tax team. The firm’s tax team now consists of 24 professionals. The firm has also recently opened a new office in Ho Chi Minh City. It will be the firm’s second overseas office after its 2008 launch in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The new office will be headed by Southeast Asian practice leader Zunu Lee. The team also include partner HyongKun Kim and several local Vietnamese lawyers and professionals.
