Former King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) Germany managing partner Stefan Krüger has joined EY Law’s Frankfurt office as a partner.
He will be the 38th partner of EY’s legal arm in Germany, which has 10 offices in the country.
His practice focuses on IP, particularly in the TMT sectors. His departure follows KWM LLP going into administration last week.
KWM China has taken on a number of Krüger’s former KWM colleagues, and set up KWM Deustchland LLP to fulfil its regulatory requirements.
Krüger joined legacy SJ Berwin in 2007 from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and later became head of the German IP practice.
He was part of the SJ Berwin team driving the merger with KWM in 2013. In February 2014, he was appointed co-head for Germany alongside Munich managing partner Sonya Pauls, who jumped ship to Clifford Chance in August 2016.
In the same year, he was appointed as a member of the KWM 12-strong International Management Committee, and also held a place on the KWMSJB management board.
He is among some of the partners from the defunct firm that have recently landed new roles in rival firms.
London investigations partner Ian Hargreaves has joined Covington & Burling, while finance partner Ian Borman has moved to Winston & Strawn’s London office.
Earlier this year, Reed Smith announced it has taken on a 50-lawyer team from KWM EUME. The group, which will be based across London, Frankfurt, Munich and Paris, is made up of 17 partners, three counsel and 22 associates. The hires are one of the largest made by any firm since the collapse of KWM EUME.
KWM China has taken on a group of 32 partners, including seven in London and three in Germany.
