Devereux Chambers’ Jolyon Maugham QC is launching a pro-bono initiative called the ‘Good Law Project’, which aims to hold the UK Government to account through legal challenges, The Lawyer can reveal.
Maugham, who appeared in the Hot 100 2016 and has since launched several Brexit challenges in the English and Irish courts, plans to launch the platform fully at the end of February.
Maugham will direct the project outside of his fee-earning work at Devereux Chambers. He is so far driving the project singlehandedly, and expects to fund it through contributions from other lawyers.
“The organisation will be a not for profit, seeking to take strategic cases in a lot of areas to advance progressive agenda,” Maugham told The Lawyer. “I hope it will serve the interests of it all, in particular communities and families that are left behind.”
Maugham said that the project will use the cases to change and improve the law, but also seeks to change public debate and to enhance public understanding of the law.
The Good Law Project will focus on tax, Brexit, the precariat and intergenerational fairness cases. Maugham said that each case will have a co-ordinator to commission and moderate content and debate and select strategic litigation.
