Kirkland & Ellis’ Hong Kong equity capital markets rainmaker Dominic Tsun has resigned from the firm, The Lawyer can reveal.
Tsun’s departure comes six years after joining the firm’s Hong Kong office from Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom. He has yet to confirm his next role.
Tsun was one of the seven partners hired by Kirkland from three firms in 2011 as a major push to boost its Hong Kong offering and take advantage of the then-buoyant IPO market. It is understood that he was given a $5m three-year guarantee deal for the move.
Tsun was one of the three Skadden partners to join Kirkland at the time, along with corporate and M&A partner Nicholas Norris and fellow capital markets partner Li-Chien Wong. He is the first partner of the 2011 group to leave the firm. However, Kirkland has since relocated three partners from Hong Kong to London, including finance partner Ashley Young, who joined from Allen & Overy in the 2011 mass hirings.
Tsun’s practice focuses on the Hong Kong equity capital markets (ECM) practice, advising international investment banks on major IPOs. Most recently, he led a team advising eight investment banks acting as underwriters in the $629m IPO of Chinese mobile internet company Meitu in Hong Kong.
Other high-profile Hong Kong ECM deals he was involved in during his time at Kirkland in include the $2.5bn IPO of China Huarong Asset Management, the $1.4bn IPO of China Railway Signal & Communications Corp and the $1.8bn IPO of Sinopec Engineering.
Kirkland declined to comment.
